Nation Donovan has chosen Scotland as the home of The world's first university
of transcendental meditation. But is Scotland ready to take the eastern art to
its heart? Paul Dalgarno finds out ..The plans are nothing if not ambitious:
in addition to the standard university subjects, up to 1000 students will strive
for "total knowledge" - a state of enlightenment so powerful that they
will ultimately create world peace. The idea is to make Scotland, in particular,
safer through a twice-daily diet of meditation and organic food. Behind it all
is Scottish singer-songwriter Donovan - of Hurdy Gurdy Man fame - who has been
recast as Dr Donovan Leitch (an honorary title awarded by the University of Hertfordshire
in 2003 for his outstanding contribution to music)... Earlier this month,
Donovan confirmed the probable site as being the Waterfront development in Edinburgh.

The

than life. It kindled fears that after his demise, the movement might suffer. "His

The
Economist (London), 14. Februar 2008 Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, guru
and tycoon, died on February 5th, aged 91 (probably)
Thirty years
earlier [1957] the maharishi, who had studied maths and physics at Allahabad University,
had calculated that one person practising the transcendental meditation he promoted
could induce virtuous behaviour among 99 non-meditators. He had already, in 1944,
helped to get 2,000 Vedic pandits, learned followers of one of the four holy books
of the Hindus, to chant mantras in an effort to bring the second world war to
an end. He had again assembled meditators in 1963 to solve the Cuban missile crisis.
But his ambitions were bigger-world peace, no less-and by the 1980s he had come
to realise that to bring harmony to a world of 5 billion people, he would need
50m meditators. Undaunted, he did the arithmetic again, this time factoring
in meditation of deep purity and concentration (including yogic flying), and happily
found he needed a number no greater than the square root of 1%-a mere 7,000 or
so. Accordingly, 7,000 flyers were assembled during the Taste of Utopia conference
in Fairfield, Iowa, in 1984. Annoyingly, though, the "wide range of positive
effects worldwide" ended with the conference. Something similar happened
after 7,000 students gathered for yogic flying and Vedic chanting near Delhi in
1988. The Berlin Wall came down all right and the cold war ended, but the money
needed to keep the group airborne ran out and, dammit, "new tensions"
started to arise in the world

who will know and understand what the Maharishi has done." Adhiraj Rajaram,

2008 Maharishi Mahesh Yogi (1917-2008) Beatles Guru, Father of
Transcendental Meditation Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, is one of the most illustrious
modern sages of the Vedic Tradition of India... In 1957, Maharishi launched
the worldwide Transcendental Meditation Movement, but it truly began in the blissful,
infinite silence of his Master, Swami Brahmananda Saraswati. In 1953, after
12 years of service to the feet of his Guru, Maharishi retired to the caves of
the 'Valley of the Saints' in Uttar Kashi, high in the Himålayas. Deep
in the silence of the Himålayas, the impulse of Nature itself led Maharishi
in 1955 to leave his secluded life in Uttar Kashi and travel to the southern-most
tip of India, with no other thought or plan in his mind than simply to follow
the whisper of Nature at Råmeshvaram in Kerala. But in this innocent move
was contained the blueprint of a new age and a new civilization, just as the sprouting
