Transcending minor matters
Valley residents meditate on peace of mind

Sheffield Mills - Practitioners of a meditation technique said to be based upon ancient eastern Vedic tradition and modern western science met near Kentville on Sunday.
Valley residents who follow the transcendental meditation program brought to the West in 1957 by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and taught to the Beatles in 1967 attended meetings in Sheffield Mills, near Kentville, both to improve their technique and introduce it to the public.
Peter Cameron of Halifax, who describes himself as a certified instructor, said... the Hindu teacher, who died recently at age 91 at his home in Holland, was educated as a physicist and will be remembered as the person who bridged the gap between ancient wisdom and modern science...

Meditation Nation
Donovan has chosen Scotland as the home of The world's first university of transcendental meditation. But is Scotland ready to take the eastern art to its heart? Paul Dalgarno finds out
..The plans are nothing if not ambitious: in addition to the standard university subjects, up to 1000 students will strive for "total knowledge" - a state of enlightenment so powerful that they will ultimately create world peace. The idea is to make Scotland, in particular, safer through a twice-daily diet of meditation and organic food. Behind it all is Scottish singer-songwriter Donovan - of Hurdy Gurdy Man fame - who has been recast as Dr Donovan Leitch (an honorary title awarded by the University of Hertfordshire in 2003 for his outstanding contribution to music)...
Earlier this month, Donovan confirmed the probable site as being the Waterfront development in Edinburgh. Bankrolling the £5million institution in part is American filmmaker David Lynch, who is also listed as a doctor...

Maharishi's movement will only grow stronger, say devotees
IANS, Allahabad : Setting aside speculation that Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's spiritual movement may lose steam after his death, his followers say that it will only grow stronger and has in place a well-knit system of kingship…
The seer, who gained fame in the 1960s as the guru of the Beatles and has over five million disciples worldwide, was an all-pervasive figure, sometimes even larger than life. It kindled fears that after his demise, the movement might suffer.
"His blessings will always be with us. How can the movement suffer? The Maharishi has trained so many administrators who can steer the movement to greater heights. He had prepared the ground for heaven on earth or Ram Rajya (rule of justice) before his death. There is no way the expansion of the movement can be halted. It will only grow stronger," a Canadian follower christened Raja Paul told IANS…

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, guru and tycoon, died on February 5th, aged 91 (probably)
…Thirty years earlier [1957] the maharishi, who had studied maths and physics at Allahabad University, had calculated that one person practising the transcendental meditation he promoted could induce virtuous behaviour among 99 non-meditators. He had already, in 1944, helped to get 2,000 Vedic pandits, learned followers of one of the four holy books of the Hindus, to chant mantras in an effort to bring the second world war to an end. He had again assembled meditators in 1963 to solve the Cuban missile crisis. But his ambitions were bigger-world peace, no less-and by the 1980s he had come to realise that to bring harmony to a world of 5 billion people, he would need 50m meditators.
Undaunted, he did the arithmetic again, this time factoring in meditation of deep purity and concentration (including yogic flying), and happily found he needed a number no greater than the square root of 1%-a mere 7,000 or so. Accordingly, 7,000 flyers were assembled during the Taste of Utopia conference in Fairfield, Iowa, in 1984. Annoyingly, though, the "wide range of positive effects worldwide" ended with the conference. Something similar happened after 7,000 students gathered for yogic flying and Vedic chanting near Delhi in 1988. The Berlin Wall came down all right and the cold war ended, but the money needed to keep the group airborne ran out and, dammit, "new tensions" started to arise in the world…

Tens of thousands attend Maharishi's funeral
…"In life he revolutionised the lives of millions of people," said Lynch, who attended the cremation and was visibly moved.
Voice quivering, he continued: "In his passing away he is bringing the West and the East together as well. In 20, 50, 500 years there will be millions of people who will know and understand what the Maharishi has done."
Adhiraj Rajaram, the order's new leader, issued a royal proclamation yesterday that a school teaching TM and yogic flying would be built in each of 48 countries to continue Maharishi's movement. The proclamation was read out by a spokesman as Rajaram does not speak in public, preferring to lead by silence…

Tony Nader to lead Maharishi's mission
...For the first time after arriving in the Sangam city, the 35 global heads of Maharishi's multi-billion dollar empire, jointly addressed a news conference, scotching rumours that after Mahesh Yogi, it would be curtains for the TM.
John Hagelin, one of the global heads of the organisation, told journalists that they were committed to fulfilling the Maharishi's dreams.
Hagelin, a physics professor at Harvard University and in-charge of the origination in the US, said Maharishi had a premonition about his end and that is why Nader had been nominated as the successor way back on October 7, 2000. "Later on, the rest of the 35 'Rajas'(the global heads) and 12 'ministers' were chosen by the guruji," he said...

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi (1917-2008)
Beatles Guru, Father of Transcendental Meditation

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, is one of the most illustrious modern sages of the Vedic Tradition of India...
In 1957, Maharishi launched the worldwide Transcendental Meditation Movement, but it truly began in the blissful, infinite silence of his Master, Swami Brahmananda Saraswati.
In 1953, after 12 years of service to the feet of his Guru, Maharishi retired to the caves of the 'Valley of the Saints' in Uttar Kashi, high in the Himålayas.
Deep in the silence of the Himålayas, the impulse of Nature itself led Maharishi in 1955 to leave his secluded life in Uttar Kashi and travel to the southern-most tip of India, with no other thought or plan in his mind than simply to follow the whisper of Nature at Råmeshvaram in Kerala. But in this innocent move was contained the blueprint of a new age and a new civilization, just as the sprouting of a seed has all the vitality to expand and produce the fruit, season after season...

Maharishi departs blissful life for a higher plane
THE guru to the Beatles who introduced transcendental meditation to the West, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, has died at his Dutch home. He was said to be 91…
Transcendental meditation, known as TM to its followers, involves reciting a mantra that practitioners say helps the mind stay calm even under pressure. It gained medical respect as the Maharishi challenged Western scientists to investigate its health benefits. Film director David Lynch, a TM practitioner, said: "It has changed my life, my world. I am not alone. Millions of other people of all ages, religions and walks of life practise the technique and enjoy incredible benefits."
Last month the Maharishi stepped down as head of his organisation and said he would be "retiring into silence"…

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Beatles' Spiritual Guru, Dies
Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the Indian founder of Transcendental Meditation whose teachings captured world attention after he became spiritual guru to the Beatles, has died in the Netherlands. He is thought to have been 91.
The Maharishi died at home in his sleep at about 7 p.m. yesterday local time. John Hagelin, a U.S.-based spokesman, said the cause of death was ``natural causes.'' The guru lived in a hermitage in Vlodrop, the Netherlands, since the 1990s and made it his international headquarters.
The Maharishi was one of the first to bring Eastern religious teachings to Western popular culture. The ``giggling guru'' -- so named for his tendency to laugh in television interviews -- appeared on the cover of Time magazine in October 1975, when almost 1 million people around the world practiced TM twice daily, including an estimated 600,000 in the U.S.....

"He died peacefully at about 7 p.m.," said Bob Roth, a spokesman for the Transcendental Meditation movement that Maharishi founded. He said his death appeared to be due to "natural causes, his age."
Once dismissed as hippie mysticism, the Hindu practice of mind control known as transcendental meditation gradually gained medical respectability.
He began teaching TM in 1955 and brought the technique to the United States in 1959. But the movement really took off after the Beatles attended one of his lectures in 1967.
